Ian Day

Director of Public Services, Calderdale Council

Born in West Yorkshire Ian spent most of his childhood growing up in Kenya, East Africa before returning to West Yorkshire to complete his education.

Ian has worked at Calderdale Council as Director of Public Services since January 2023 leading the majority of the Council’s front line services including waste & recycling, parks and bereavement services, transport, parking, community protection, arts and cultural services, sport and leisure revenue and benefits and customer services. One of the key projects led by Ian during his time at Calderdale was transferring the arrangements for waste and collection services from an outsourced contract to a new joint venture with the Norse Group, Calderdale Norse Limited. Ian is a Director of Calderdale Norse and has a seat on the board.

Prior to the move to Calderdale Ian worked as Assistant Director, Neighbourhoods for Bradford Council since. In this role Ian was the strategic lead as one of the UK’s five ‘Integrated Communities’ pilot areas and through this worked with the Council of Europe on an international steering committee on anti-discrimination, diversity and inclusion setting up a framework for multilevel governance and policies for intercultural integration. Prior to that Ian worked as a business transformation programme manager, where he programme managed a £160 million budget reduction programme and also led on a number of outsourcing and insourcing arrangements including a £50 million annual contract for education services.
